Avelino Corma Canós ( Valencian : Avel·lí Corma i Canós ; Moncófar , Castellón , Valencia, December 15, 1951) is a Spanish chemist , founder and former director (1990–2010) of the Institute of Chemical Technology , a joint research center created in 1990 by the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) based on the UPV campus. He was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research in 2014.
He studied chemistry at the University of Valencia (1967-1973) and received his doctorate from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1976. His doctoral work was carried out under the supervision of Professor Antonio Cortés Arroyo at the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (CSIC). After two years of study in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Queen's University in Canada , he joined the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) as a researcher in 1979. In 1987, he became a research professor at the CSIC. From 1990 to 2010, he directed the Institute of Chemical Technology , a joint center of the CSIC and the Polytechnic University of Valencia . He works on the molecular design of catalysts , especially zeolites , and on sustainable catalytic processes in the fields of hydrocarbon refining and the production of vehicle fuels from biomass derivatives.
He has published over 1,400 articles in national and international journals, and has written three books and several reviews. He is the author of over two hundred patents, more than twenty of which are in commercial use. He is a regular reviewer of books and manuscripts for numerous scientific journals and has served on the editorial board of several scientific journals.
He is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain , the European Academy , the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain, the National Academy of Engineering (United States) , the steering committee of the most important journals in the field of catalysis, and the Royal Society of the United Kingdom.
